Reception

In Reception, we provide a curriculum which is purposeful, engaging and motivating for all children, building on their interests, previous experiences and their starting points. They learn through first-hand experiences, both inside and outside, and are encouraged to be independent in their learning. Children are provided with a context for their learning and given opportunities to consolidate and extend their knowledge and understanding through both adult and child-initiated activities. Children are encouraged to have a positive attitude to their learning which reflects the values and skills needed for future success. Throughout Reception, children will have the opportunity to develop their social skills and form positive relationships with their peers and adults. They develop skills in turn-taking and sharing and are given opportunities to practise these skills in a safe and nurturing environment. We recognise and value the importance of early language skills which are developed through conversations and interactions with adults and through high-quality texts in a language-rich environment.

Children in Reception are taught using the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The curriculum consists of seven areas of learning.  All areas of learning are important and are linked with each other.  The areas are divided into the Prime and Specific areas.

The Prime areas are:

  • communication and language
  • physical development
  • personal, social and emotional development

The Specific areas are:

  • literacy
  • mathematics
  • understanding the world
  • expressive arts and design
