British Values

The Department for Education defines British Values as follows:

  • Respect for democracy and support or participation in the democratic process
  • Respect for the basis on which the law is made and applies in England
  • Support for equality of opportunity for all
  • Support and respect for the liberties of all within the law
  • Respect for and tolerance of different faiths and religious and other beliefs

At Meath Green Infant School, we aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the world. We encourage our children to be creative, unique, open-minded and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and of others in our school, our local community and the wider world.

How do we Achieve this?
Democracy
  • Election of pupil leaders e.g. School Council, Playground Pals
  • Carry out roles and responsibilities; talk about who helps us in our country
  • Vote on decisions to be made
  • Express our views and opinions e.g. In PSHE lessons
Rule of Law
  • Learn our Rainbow of Respect and our school rules
  • Follow online safety and personal safety guidance
  • Listen to visiting speakers so we understand the responsibilities we all have and the consequences of not following the rules e.g. RNLI and water safety
  • Explore right and wrong, cooperation, individual and shared responsibility
Individual Liberty
  • Make informed choices in a safe and supportive environment
  • Celebrate individuality and what makes us who we are
Mutual Respect
  • Welcome invited visitors into our school
  • Learn about friendship and getting along
  • Follow our Rainbow of Respect
  • Learn about our own other cultures, religions, beliefs and practices
  • Have opportunities to express our own views and beliefs
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
  • Explore a range of cultures through R.E., assemblies and educational visits
  • Promote diversity through our celebrations of faiths and different cultures, stories and shared experiences
