Music
We value music as a powerful form of communication, and we hope to develop and foster a sense of school community and connectedness through music. Our aim is to provide a high-quality music education, which promotes joy and celebration, experimentation, curiosity and imagination.
Music is all around us, and we aim to use it as vehicle to:
- enable children to relax
- build self-confidence by learning how to play an instrument
- foster a sense of achievement
- help to develop memory, language and reasoning; and promote a sense of belonging
How do we Teach Music?
Throughout school, we use Charanga, as our music scheme to teach music. This is in line with the DfE Model Music Curriculum (2021). Each music lesson consists of four elements that contribute towards the steadily increasing development of musicianship. These are singing, listening, composing and performing.
In all year groups, children enjoy singing songs, chants and rhymes. They enjoy experimenting with different sounds, listening to and discussing music. There are also regular opportunities for children to explore making music, using tuned and untuned musical instruments.
By the time the children leave us at the end of Year 2, they will be able to:
- use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes
- play tuned and untuned instruments musically
- listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music
- experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music
